Wind power is useless. It is! Andrew Bolt has, like, proved it beyond all doubt.
Victoria in this heat wave has been desperate for electricity, not least for all the airconditioning. So how have our green-dazed Labor Government’s new windfarms been helping out the state’s supplies?
Well, to start with, let’s check the winds at Wonthaggi over the past three days, and see if they’ve been strong enough to drive the six turbines that now despoil that coast:
28/1 3:00pm CALM
28/1 09:00am 4km/h
28/1 06:00am 4km/h
27/1 3:00pm 7km/h
27/1 09:00am 9km/h
27/1 06:00am 4km/h
26/1 03:00pm 15km/h
26/1 09:00am CALM
26/1 06:00am CALM
Hmm. Not enough breeze to even fan a face. Thanks (sic) heavens for coal.
Of course, Andy has selectively selected some days this week that show poor wind speeds, during a heatwave that features hot north winds and not the prevailing south-west winds for which the turbines were designed. He has also completely ignored wind data for the rest of January and previous months that show much more robust gusts of wind.
Thanks (sic) heavens for facts.
Scott – “Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good blog article”. This is the bumper sticker on the back of the Bilia Volvo Andy drives to work.
There is a pretty big wind farm near my property in the lower south east of SA.
Being that our SW coastline is in the path of the roaring 40′s, it pumps out power 24/7, to about 70,000 homes. (approx. 250,000 people)
The new upgrade going in will mean there is turbines from kingston to lake bonny, and will reliably provide electicity to over 250,000 homes, or 1,000,000 people.
Plans are being put forward to build a geothermal power plant to the north, tidal power at Pt Macdonnel and a biomass power plant that will burn pellets made from timber mill trash, rather than coal.
With just the wind power, our district will be able to provide most of SA’s domestic power requirements, and wih the geo, tidal and biomass we will hopefully be exporting green energy to the rest of Australia.
Wind and solar are safe, reliable PROVEN technologies. Why in gods name does the man oppose cheap, clean electricity?
One can only assume he is being paid by coal interests to sow a fine crop of lies to slow the development of renewables in Australia.
Andrew Bolts opposition to renewables is obviously entirely ideologically driven. I just dont get how can a man with children of his own can be so blase about their futures.
The Right are so filled with hate, they even hate their own children!
The Woakwine range, on which the turbines are sited is pretty good beef and sheep country. The farmers who own land which has turbines on it get $5000 a year per turbine!
I know a bloke out that way with 11 turbines on his land, he makes $55,000 a year on top of his other income, and the turbines in no way negetively impact of his buisness.
It seems that on top of hating future generations and the USA, Bolt also hates South Australian farmers.
I fear that money and influence are the only things that this wothless, immoral man really cares about.
Bolt being selective ? Noooooo, i don’t believe it. lol
Talking about Andy and his right wingnuts, they are putting the boot into the U.S. President again. This hatred of the U.S. by the right has to stop, they are our closest ally. It has just taken them one week to build up this dislike of the U.S. What has changed?
And the flock, some of them are very scary in what they write. God help Australia ( and the world ) if some of them ever venture outside away from Andys’ blog.
>>Wind and solar are safe, reliable PROVEN technologies. Why in gods name does the man oppose cheap, clean electricity?<<<
Because wind turbines are an eye sore. I guess AB hasn’t taken a drive through the La Trobe valley lately, either that our he finds open cut mining and cooling towers to be far more attractive.
I’d be interested to see his reaction if they decided an open cut at Wonthaggi would be a good way of extracting little bit more coal from the area.
The professional idiot strikes again.
Any chance that Bolty’s sudden attention to the linits of natural systems might have him ponder that, while the wind will blow again tomorrow, todays empty coal mine will remain stubbornly free of coal for ever.
Not quite forever but it will but it will be a very long time before they are replenished.
Sorry Geoff, they do venture outside Andy’s blog – they give themselves names like “Southern Cross Soldiers”
“This hatred of the U.S. by the right has to stop, they are our closest ally.”
Geoff, I am sick of it too. Clearly, the “conservatives” are against the ANZUS pact.
More deception from the professional idiot.
I actually wonder whether Bolt is a deliberate liar,
or he genuinely believes that he is accurately presenting facts and data. Maybe a combination of both. It matters not for his loyal idiots however, as as discussed here before most of them dont even bother to follow his links or look at the data themsleves.
Anybody else noticing how much material from the Daily Show about Obama is turning up on Bolt’s blog, without acknowledging the Daily Show for “inspiration”? Shouldn’t be surprised, I suppose.
He’s just pissed off due to the fact that he’s been blacked out.
Oh, the humanity, etc.
The Bolt frog in his glass of water continues to believe everything is fine, even as the smell of his own boiling flesh rises up around him.
there’s definitely a sense that Bolt is on the backfoot the last couple of days on climate. Unfortunately, this means that we were right.

Surely you are not suggesting that Melbourne’s heat wave is meant to be proof of AGW?!
Surely you are not suggesting that Melbourne’s heat wave is meant to be proof of AGW?!
no but it’s funny that the man who wants to keep a record of how many cold weather events that al gore has returns from holiday and goes on the offensive with his continual dishonest and incompetent attacks on AGW during the worst heat wave in recorded history in his city.

While the rest of Australia is experiencing a cold summer and the northern hemisphere is experiencing record breaking cold winter weather.
Bolt is the Professional Idiot. RadMatt is the Amateur.
Hey Rad, why does Bolt and the right hate the US so much?
Craigy
I posed just that question yesterday:
“It’s a real Obama bash-fest on this blog.
Why do you hate America Andrew? ”
The replies are quite funny.

lol!! bolt on al gore’s ‘propaganda techniques’ (Gore Mocked):
Dr Roy Spencer – who, unlike Gore, is a real climate expert – lists the 10 techniques that make Gore a guru:
Appeal to fear…
Appeal to authority…
Bandwagon…
Flag-waving…
Ad Hominem attacks…
Appeal to Prejudice…
Black-and-White fallacy…
Euphoria…
Falsifying information…
Stereotyping or Name Calling or Labeling…
3 words: pot, meet kettle.
Hahaha, you sure stirred them up, Skeptic!
Bron
I just loved Macosghair’ s sweet defence of Jay Santos, who, we must not forget, “has been contributing mightily for a long time now.”
I think someone has a crush.
‘Surely you are not suggesting that Melbourne’s heat wave is meant to be proof of AGW?!’
Shortly followed by….
‘While the rest of Australia is experiencing a cold summer and the northern hemisphere is experiencing record breaking cold winter weather.’
So you are saying that the extreme weather in southern Australia proves nothing….but extreme weather the northern hemisphere does.
Interesing Rad.
Perhaps you can explain how this works?!
I’ve commented here and there on The Professional Idiot’s blog, I did so last Tuesday. But I dropped a comment there today and I’ve been Banned. He tries to claim I’ve been told I’m banned from the blog three or four times. Absolute liar.
The Professional Idiot just censors comments that may strike to close to the bone, particularly for his pro-civilian slaughter readers.

‘Bolt is the Professional Idiot. RadMatt is the Amateur.’
No Bob, Rad is The Apprentice Idiot.
Thanks DbD, I stand corrected. Henceforth RadMatt shall be dubbed The Apprentice Idiot.
Rad/Bolt ( i still think they are one and the same, maybe twins ? )………..anyway, Rad can you explain why Californias’ temps are 15-20 degrees F above average for winter? Hey, if Bolt can cheery pick…..
So you are saying that the extreme weather in southern Australia proves nothing….but extreme weather the northern hemisphere does
Dude I would think that an entire hemisphere (half the planet) experiencing lower than average temperature is more telling than a tiny region in the south east corner of Australia.
As you well know Ron, Bolt cherry picks extreme weather events to support his stance on AGW, while completely ignoring other extreme weather conditions that do not support his views.
I, unlike Rad, Bolt and yourself do not believe that statistcal outlyers can be used to prove anything regarding climate change.
I was simply pointing out Rads ridiculous statement that he believes an extreme cold weather event disproves the theory of GW, but believes an extreme hot weather event is irrelvant, and proves nothing.
Either extreme weather events are relevant to climate change debate or they are not. You dont get to have it both ways.
See how this is cherry picking Ron, or are you too blinded by ideology?
Dude.
“Dr Roy Spencer – who, unlike Gore, is a real climate expert”
Sure is. Have he and Christy worked out where the Troposphere ends and the stratosphere begins?
Pot, Kettle…RED HOT!

“See how this is cherry picking Ron, or are you too blinded by ideology?”
i think we know the answer to that one. ;o
Can’t Andy and Timmy think for themselves. They got together yesterday and put up the same story on their blogs. Under different headings, Andys ” red hot hypocrites ” Timmy ” it happened ” It was just more Obama bashing but the words were exactly the same, talk about being lazy.
I ask again, why all this hatred the right have for the U.S.
I would ask them myself but i think i’ve been banned…i ask too many questions of them. :-)
“I would ask them myself but i think i’ve been banned…i ask too many questions of them. :-)”
That seems to be the way it goes. On the other hand, you can post the most insane nonsensical shit you can think of, and it’ll get published. That’s been a hobby of mine for a few months. I’m amazed at what they let through sometimes.
I’m sure there are many other japesters like you, Darren, doing the exact same thing. Then again, The Professional Idiot trounces all other insane, nonsensical shit from commenters today when he sees the words “contraception and abortion” and comes up with “Baby Cull”.
Even most abortion-clinic bombing terrorists don’t view condoms as killing unborn babies.
A Leftist ate my baby!
DbD – a correction :
A Nazi Green Commo Lefty ate my, as yet, unconceived baby.
Lefties, is there no evil which they will not do?
“when he sees the words “contraception and abortion” and comes up with “Baby Cull””
Dude must be struggling to keep up those million hits a month. Either that, or he truly has no soul.
Hmmm interesting, in the late 80`s a very popular and trendy theory evolved, it told the story of how a butterfly`s wings could create a Hurricane on the other side of the World, then it evolved into things like strange attractors, fractals and all sorts of bizarre effects. Now if Chaos theory is at all credable we must look at it all across the board. If you take energy from one system then it must effect all the systems that use that associated energy. Wave power takes the energy from the Sea and leaves the Sea flat, so what happens to the natural flow of sand, and natural Coastal erosion( up to 4 tonnes per tide per mile) that used to feed sand banks, what happens to the wildlife when there sandbank disappears, what occurs when you change the natural flow of things. If we suck all the energy out of the wind were will that lead Us?
Thats an interesting idea Astronomer, but i dont think thats how it works.
If it was, windbreaks, sailing ships, mountains and the windmills used for centuries to grind corn and pump water would have caused some probems.
“Now if Chaos theory is at all credable we must look at it all across the board. If you take energy from one system then it must effect all the systems that use that associated energy.”
You seem to want to discuss the long term and entirely theoretical negative effects of wind and tidal power, why dont you apply the same logic to burning huge amounts of coal and gas?
Surely if “you take energy from one system then it must effect all the systems” then equally adding energy to a system would have equally unpredictable ‘chaos’ effects.
I reckon you need to give this one a bit more thought mate!
As I’ve often said, I’m no expert on global warming, or it’s causes, but now that they are saying that Greenland’s glacier meltdown has slowed back to year 2000 levels,
doesn’t this kind of support the theory that man’s influence on climate change is fairly minimal and more attributable to natural cycles ?
“Dude must be struggling to keep up those million hits a month. Either that, or he truly has no soul.”
Just out of interest, how many hits does this site get per month?
What would be interesting about such a stat?
what would be interesting is how many different users go to his site. i’m absolutely certain that this figure is everytime someone loads or reloads any page on his blog.
NotAllRight is absolutely right.
The ‘One Million Hits A Month’ figure counts in every page load, every refresh and every time someone leaves a comment and keeps checking back to see what someone else has said in response.
Considering The Professional Idiot’s blog is promoted through the front pages of News.com.au, The Herald Sun and the Courier Mail, and scores links from mega-hit sites like the Drudge Report, one million hits a month for a corporate media blog isn’t really all that impressive. Plus there’s his wide exposure on morning television and paid appearances on ABC programs (doesn’t bag the ABC much anymore does he? Not now he successfully whined his way on air).
Evil Pagan Lefty independent media websites like CrooksAndLiars.com and RawStory.com rack up hit counts like that in a few days. In Australia, Larvatus Prodeo claims it gets something like 1.5 million hits a month, with no front page links from the Herald Sun (a few hundred thousand online readers a day) or News.com.au (another few hundred thousand readers a day.
But good on him for finding his audience, and building on it. I’m sure it was devastating to him that his blog did so little to turn the tide at the last election.
“but now that they are saying that Greenland’s glacier meltdown has slowed back to year 2000 levels”
GavinM: where did you hear this, all i’ve heard is the opposite – ice coverage decreasing.

Hi Confessions,
It’s hard to know who to believe isn’t it ? I must admit it all leaves me rather puzzled….I stumbled across this story when I was looking for something else:
http://www.worldclimatereport.com/index.php/2009/01/23/glacier-slowdown-in-greenland-how-inconvenient/
I don’t have a subscription to the Science Magazine site, so couldn’t see the full article there, but I’m assuming that the exerpts taken from it at the above link have been quoted accurately.
PS: Agree with you on Iraq, the low turn-out of Sunnis is very disheartening.
Darryl – 1M a month is not too hard. I outlined how it works previously. Follow me on this one:
Bolt home page; (one hit)
Blog of interest; (one hit)
Go through comments pages (5 hits)
submit comment (1 hit)
comment approved page (1 hit)
back to comments pages (1 hit)
check back later in day to see if comment makes it through moderation (7 hits)
total page impressions = up to 17 based on the above. Now each day alone in the daily forum Bolt gets over 100 comments. 100 comments at even 12 hits for 30 days equates to 36,000. And that is only the people who comment!
Add in the columns that usually get 300+ comments x 4 per week adds up to another 100k hits.
The way they have set up the blog is designed to generate more page impressions by having the ‘intermediate’ pages. I have found it more common that if say you click on a sports story it does not necessarily take you directly to the story but to the sports page.. add another page impression and more revenue from advertisers.
Bolt couldnt lie straight in his grave he is that crooked. He repeatedly misrepresents facts, twists the truth & then feeds it to the faithfull, which are all too willing to not do any research of their own.
The amount of times I see Bolt bring up the Co2 arguement, 1998, globe is cooling crap is rediculous. When cornered on it, they either censor or attempt to shut you down on radio.
I remember cornering him on this one.
“Severinghaus told Crikey that he doesn’t make a habit of Googling his own research, but Bolt appeared on his radar when a librarian in Brisbane wrote to him asking if “I’d really meant what Bolt said I meant”.
He didn’t. “Many, many other studies have found that carbon dioxide causes the earth to warm. This is not controversial, and to continue to deny it is akin to denying that cigarette smoking causes cancer,” Severinghaus told Crikey. “The evidence for a human-caused warming of the globe is overwhelming. The scientific debate is over, and what we are seeing now is an attempt to mislead the public.”
Severinghaus explained how Bolt had been slippery with the facts, “…Bolt omitted the key piece of information that the warmings took 5,000 years, thus misleading the reader into thinking that carbon dioxide was not warming at the same time as temperature and thus cannot have caused the warming…”
Severinghaus wrote a letter to the editor of the Sunday Mail, but it was never published. He posted a comment on Bolt’s blog but told Crikey “…effectively I have not been able to make much if any response”.
“At the very least I would like it to go on record that Bolt’s abuse of my science is not done with my approval,” says Severinghaus.
Bolt wouldnt admit to anything & in the end, his followers ended up using the false information as “facts”. Sheeesh.
Hmmm. I was more thinking about the future when we are using high altitude kites ( In there milions) to create Terawatts of electricity, dont forget that all energy will eventualy end up as heat. But that isnt here nor there, we must address the problem of the Biosphere being abused for the good of the corparate powers, i e the powers that be oblitarating the rain forests for the production of farm intestive food for a Planet that cant substain the current population. What will happen when the population hits 12 Billion plus?. The phamasutical buissness will have a field day selling us the cure to there problem. But as Bob Dlyon said `were just pawns in there game`. Excuse the spelling mistakes etc etc , but I cant be arsed to check it.
